THE WESTCHESTER ALTERNATIVE
PLACES TO GO
This wasoriginally a place to list things like coffee shops, but there
are also whole towns that have character and are worth checking out.
Check out a music store, and get a cup of coffee or something!!!
kafe haus
Slave to the grind in bronxville.
Bronxville might be known for being a bit "snooty", but it actually
began as an art community. And with the marjorly hippie-dippie Sarah
Lawrence college right up the hill, and a bit of flavor from a few
europen au pairs, this local coffe shop can have some character.
Nyack
Not exactly Greenwich Village, but it's right across the
Tappan Zee and seems to go with a more free-spitited flow than most
places on the east side of the bridge.
S.U.N.Y Purchase
Purchase is amazing. There isn't even a real town, but the college is
one of the cooler ones around. Everything's on the campus. It's a great
place to go and just hang out. They used to have movie nights, but
there's always a cool vibe happening. There's a bus that goes there
from White Plains, and they now charge a few bucks to park for the day.
As a public university, it has always been an open campus for people in
the community, but you never know about rules for that kind of thing
thses days!
New Paltz
Ulster County used to be considered "upstate", but since more and more
people commute to the city from Poughkeepsie and beyond, we've got to
mention it! S.U.N.Y New Paltz is known for being a bit of a punk rock
hippie school like Purchase, but it's bigger, and there's an actual
town!
Woodstock
Where it all started! Well, where it was supposed to start, anyway.
This freakalicious little town a little north of New Paltz was where
the original concert of 1969 was supposed to happen, but local
residents "came to their senses", and the concert was moved to Max
Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York about an hour and a half away from
the city in
Sullivan County. Woodstock still retains its original hippness, and you
can still pick up some tie-dyed candles, if you go for that sort of
thing.
Rosendale
Right between New Paltz and Woodstock, this seems to have become an
artsy little town a little above New Paltz. We haven't been up there
for a bit, so
who knows if there's anything to actually do, but if you're in the
area, it might be worth having a look!
